Vampire Eyes and Eye Color

Ok, so my wife and I went to see the new Twilight movie “New Moon”. I must confess to not being a fan of movies but this one I enjoyed. Having seen the first movie, it was only natural that there would be some interested to see how the story progressed. During the movie, one thing that got my attention was the fact that the vampires had different colored eyes. I asked the resident Twilight expert (my daughter Camila) and she quickly replied “its the diet, duhh!!!”. I do recall that in the first movie, Bella first notices Edward’s very dark eyes. Since I have not read any of the books,  I was told by my daughter that Edward was “thirsty” at the time he met Bella.

As I had never learned about Vampires eyes in my residency, and in an effort to know a little more about these types of eyes, I decided to take it upon myself to get “googlecated” on what the eye colors meant. As always, my daughter and Google were very effective in my education.

Ok, the rule of thumb on Vampire eyes is:

Vampires who feed on animals have golden eyes.
Vampires who feed on humans have red eyes.
Vampires that are thirsty the eyes get darker/black.

So the resident expert helped me understand how the eye color thing works. The diet is what dictates the eye color. The lighter colors are for the “vegetarian” vampires (those who feed on animals), the saphire-red hues are caused by the human diet. The Cullens all have a similar “liquid topaz” eyes because of their diet.

This explains why the eyes of the “Volturi Council” and the other vampires like Victoria and James are a deep saphire-red color.

I found in a website a quote that the author, Meyer writes:  “If a Cullen were to drink human blood, his/her eyes would turn burgundy. If two weeks pass without human or animal blood the vampire’s eyes go entirely black. If that Cullen then returned to an animal diet, his/her eyes would return to dark gold. Brand-newly created vampires are recognizable by their eyes, which are a vivid, bright red due to the massive amount of human blood (the blood that was already in the human at the time he/she was changed) that lingers in the tissues. That red fades slowly over the course of a year.”

Very Cool! I am ready to see the vampires at the office!
